WHO IS YOUR FAMILY & WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
I am the oldest of 3 kids--I have two younger brothers, Aaron (5 years younger) and Michael (7 years younger)--I am obviously the smartest and most good looking of all 3 ;) I am married to my high school sweetheart, David (I went to Christian Academy of Louisville, he went to South Oldham, but we met as 16-year-olds working at TJMaxx in Springhurst!). We have 3 kids, Mason who is turning 6 in August, Elizabeth who is 3, and an 11-week old baby girl, Juliet. We are a chaotic and chronically late bunch, but I wouldn't change us for the world! I have lived all over the place! I was born in Nyack, New York, then moved to Pontiac, Michigan, followed by Los Alamos, New Mexico for most of my childhood, then my sophomore year in high school my family moved to Louisville! I have lived in the Louisville area since then!
DO YOU HAVE A SIGNATURE BIBLE VERSE?
I don't know if it's a "signature verse", but one that really speaks to me in a powerful way is Philippians 4:12(NIV) " I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want." I have certainly experienced both ends of this spectrum throughout my life and I think maybe that is why it is so special to me. I have by no means mastered this, but it is a beautiful reminder that joy and being content has NOTHING to do with our external circumstances. I'm a work in progress in this department!!
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE FLOWER?
I love any/all things tropical!! One of my favorite flowers would have to be the hibiscus flower. A close second would be a magnolia.
WHAT ENCOURAGES YOU PERSONALLY?
I would say someone genuinely showing an interest in me and things that are important to me. You can tell when someone REALLY cares about you and makes the effort to let you in some way. When that happens, it just fills my heart!
SHARE SOME OF THE JOURNEY THAT LED TO THIS CURRENT SEASON OF LIFE.
After graduating from the University of Kentucky in 2005 with a degree in Psychology, I moved back to Louisville. My husband and I were married in May of 2009 and had our first child, Mason, in August of 2011. After college, I had taken a job and although it was a great job over the 10 years I was there, I never felt in any way fulfilled. Since I was a little girl, I wanted to be a stay-at-home mom--just like my mom was--and in December 2015 my dream became a reality. I was able to quit my job to stay home full-time (at that time with my 2 kids).
Back up a couple years to 2013...my earth was completely shattered when I lost my amazing mother, Beth, to cancer on February 2, 2013. She loved Jesus very much and I know without a doubt where she is, but life without her here is just never going to be the same. The month before losing my mom, I also experienced my first miscarriage. I will never forget that pain but also find comfort in knowing that not only does Jesus have that baby, but my Momma does too. After losing my mom, I soon became unexpectedly pregnant with my daughter, Elizabeth--who is named after my mother. Amidst that tumultuous year, my family was also dealing with the hell of addiction. My youngest brother Michael had been battling addiction since middle school. On January 1, 2014 he overdose and ONLY by the grace of God he survived. On March 12, 2014 my brother FINALLY chose sobriety once and for all. Out of this part of our lives, 'Backpacks from Beth' was born - my nonprofit organization in memory of our mother and in celebration of my brother and his recovery. 'Backpacks from Beth' serves individuals in recovery from addiction. If having two kids and running a nonprofit doesn't make me busy enough (ha!), we decided to add another little one to our bunch...sadly, I lost another baby to an early miscarriage in March 2016, but I like to think of it more as giving my Momma another grandbaby in heaven (great, now I'm in tears!). God is good and on April 20, 2017, we welcomed our earthly baby #3--sweet Juliet Grace.
WHAT IN LIFE KEEPS YOU BUSY? DO YOU EVER STRUGGLE WITH BEING TOO BUSY?
KIDS!!!! Life with kids just means you're nonstop busy...add a newborn and we're barely functioning over here!! In all seriousness, YES I struggle with being too busy nonstop. Some of the "busyness" is unavoidable...the cooking, the cleaning, the nonstop laundry, grocery shopping and on and on. Add to that running a growing non-profit organization, Backpacks from Beth, Inc., and there are truly not enough hours in my day! I have truly been trying to say "no" to the right things. I think, NO MATTER what stage we find ourselves in, we find ways to fill our schedule. We can ALL benefit from figuring out how to thin out our schedules and listen more for what God desires for us to fill it with!
WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU PAUSE AND RELAX?
This is a hard one for me. In a perfect world, I would sit on the beach with some tropical adult beverage listening to the waves and just be in total bliss. That isn't reality though! In my every everyday life, I honestly find it extremely difficult to truly relax. I am very high strung and anxious by nature, so even when I am outwardly "relaxing", my mind is usually racing with to-dos and checklists. I'm trying to practice taking time for me. even though I struggle with this SO much.
IF YOU HAD ALL THE TIME IN THE WORLD, WHAT WOULD BE ON YOUR “TO-DO” LIST?
Selfishly, TRAVEL!!!! I absolutely LOVE traveling!! Not so selfishly, I would pour so much more time into my kids and doing fun things with them, as well as into my nonprofit to help grow and promote it even more!
